On the yarrow stalk method: The traditional process uses 49 stalks divided into two heaps, with one stalk set aside. Each heap is then counted off by fours; the remainders (1–4 from each heap, plus the set-aside stalk) are summed. This sum — either 9, 8, 7, or 6 — determines each line. The process repeats three times per line, six lines total: 18 operations per casting. The probability distribution is not uniform: old yang (9, changing) occurs 1/16 of the time; old yin (6, changing) 3/16; young yang (7) 5/16; young yin (8) 7/16. This asymmetry — K'un-biased, change-rare — is deliberately encoded in the ritual.
